Mark Roberts

Birmingham born artist Mark Roberts was educated at the esteemed Moseley School of Art. Following his education he embarked on a career in retail which progressed to retail design and development. During this time he produced a number of interior design concepts for well known blue chip retailers. Eventually Mark set up his own interiors business which gave him the opportunity to promote his own artwork. ‘I was able to offer artwork that complimented the design theme to create unique and individual room sets for my clients’.
The demand for Mark’s art grew following a number of successful exhibitions both in the U.K. and Europe, so he decided to focus primarily on his painting and has now established himself as progressive artist. His strong contemporary style has been popular with collectors and individuals looking for private commissions. Mark trades under the name Provocative Art. ‘I chose the title because I want my work to be thought provoking, causing discussion and debate as well as being stimulating’.
The main inspiration for Mark’s work has been the female form. The contrasts between light and shade feature strongly in his work, with colours forming shapes within shapes creating a bold contemporary look. Mark works with a variety of medium but mainly gouche and acrylic. ‘I like the relative cleanliness of the medium compared to oil for example’.

As his painting style evolved, Mark turned to glass mosaic and discovered a new medium to work with that brought new light to his imagery. Using his own artwork as inspiration for his designs, his glass mosaics found a new audience. More recently his glass mosaic work has developed into 3D and internally illuminated creations that literally light up a room. ‘These works have to be seen to appreciate the impact they have, no photograph can do them justice.’

Mark has recently moved to Fromes Hill, Ledbury where he works from his studio. ‘I always have a selection of glass mosaics, paintings, drawings and limited edition prints on display and for sale and encourage people to visit albeit I do restrict viewings to a strictly by appointment basis.

Mark is a member of the Worcester Society of Artists, The Northampton Guild of Designer Craftsmen, British Association of Modern Mosaics and The Erotic Art Society.
